TRAINING PLACEMENTS

Have you ever considered being a Relate counsellor? Relate offers excellent opportunities for acquiring the skills of relationship counselling in an environment that provides professional training and supervision. Your training is provided by Relate Central Office but you will be based in one of the offices of Relate Avon (Bath, Bristol or Weston-super-Mare) for all your counselling work and supervision.

Here in Relate Avon we are very committed to maintaining ourselves as an independent charity working in the voluntary sector. Our aim is to provide a professional standard of service through a team of counsellors who share our commitment to working in the community. If you feel that working with your counselling colleagues to help families in this area improve their relationships is a good idea then working for Relate Avon might be the place for you.

In the first instance you would enrol for the relevant training course with the Relate Institute and you would proceed to conduct your placement in Relate Avon. At the end of this placement we would expect you to join the counselling team in Avon meeting the needs of our clients.

Relate runs the following training programmes:

Introduction to Couple Counselling (University Advanced Diploma)
This one year programme, in collaboration with the University of Hull, aims to provide an introductory training for people wishing to work as couple counsellors with Relate.
After successfully completing the programme students will:
1. have a basic grounding in aspects of psychodynamic theory, systemic theory and human sexuality which are applicable to working with couples
2. have developed basic counselling and communication skills that are needed when working with couples
3. have started working with clients at a Relate Centre
4. have access to further advanced training at Masters level with Relate (via Doncaster College) in Couple Therapy, Psychosexual Therapy, Systemic Therapy and Clinical Supervision, which will assist in providing the means to achieve accreditation with the relevant professional body depending on which training is undertaken.

Postgraduate Diploma in Couple Therapy
This two year programme, in collaboration with the University of Hull, has been designed in accordance with the course approval criteria of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. The first year of the programme offers psychodynamic and systemic theory together with concepts of human sexuality that are relevant to couple therapy. Year two extends the theoretical knowledge and applies those ideas to issues which couples often present in therapy, as well as addressing a number of different and flexible ways of providing therapy for couples.
After successfully completing the programme students will:
1. have gained an advanced knowledge and understanding of couple therapy from the perspectives of systemic theory, psychodynamic theory and human sexuality to the level where they will have gained the training requirements for professional accreditation with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)
2. be equipped to work in either the voluntary sector or as independent practitioner in the field of couple therapy
3. have access to further advanced training to the degree of MSc.

Master’s Degree in Relationship Therapy
A one-year part-time programme involving training in research methodology and evaluation, completion of a 20,000 word dissertation and continued clinical practice. Entry is via the postgraduate diploma or equivalent plus counsellor training and couple casework experience.

Postgraduate Diploma in Relationship Therapy (Psychosexual Therapy)
This two year programme, in collaboration with the University of Hull, has been designed in accordance with the course approval criteria of the British Association for Sexual and Relationship Therapy. The aim of the programme is to provide an education and training which develops and enables practitioners to work with couples and individuals presenting psychosexual problems. The programme recognises the richness and diversity of the communities in which people live and is designed to engender practice which has a relevance to all sectors of society.
After successfully completing the programme students will:
1. have gained an advanced knowledge and understanding of clinical assessment, treatment strategies, cultural contexts and therapeutic approaches involved in the process of Psychosexual Therapy.
2. be enabled to gain professional accreditation with the British Association for Sexual and Relationship Therapy.

Postgraduate Diploma in Relationship Therapy (Systemic Therapy)
This two year programme, in collaboration with the University of Hull, the first year of which is accredited by the Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice (AFT) at Foundation level, provides an initial training and education in systemic theory and practice.
After successfully completing the programme students will:
1. have gained a knowledge and understanding of systemic and related therapies. Year one of the programme is accredited by the Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice at Foundation level (professional accreditation will be sought for year two at Intermediate level)
2. be equipped to work in a range of contexts with families.
3. have access to further advanced training to the degree of MSc.

Postgraduate Diploma in Relationship Therapy (Clinical Supervision)
This two year programme, in collaboration with the University of Hull, has been designed in accordance with the course approval criteria of relevant professional bodies. The programme examines, analyses, critiques and provides the opportunity to apply various models and modalities of clinical supervision.
After successfully completing the programme students will:
1. have gained an advanced knowledge and understanding of clinical supervision from the perspectives of systemic theory, psychodynamic theory and human sexuality.
2. be equipped to work as a supervisor in a range of clinical contexts.
3. have access to further advanced training to the degree of MSc.
