Is Online Counselling Right For Me? Pros, Cons and How It Works
Over the past few years, online counselling has become a popular and effective way for many people to access support. At Relate Avon, we offer both in-person and online counselling, giving you the flexibility to choose what suits you best. If you're wondering whether online counselling might be right for you, here’s a helpful guide to the advantages, challenges, and how it all works.
Pros of Online Counselling
1. Convenience and Flexibility
One of the biggest advantages of online counselling is the ability to attend sessions from the comfort of your home, workplace, or anywhere private. There's no need to travel, park, or take extra time off work. It can also make it easier to fit counselling into a busy schedule. For couples especially, coordinating diaries and travel can be tricky. Online counselling makes it easier for both people to attend sessions together, meaning it’s more likely you'll both be able to commit to regular sessions.
2. Accessibility
For clients with mobility issues, social anxiety, or those living in rural areas, online counselling removes many of the barriers that can make in-person appointments difficult or impossible.
3. Comfort and Familiarity
Being in your own environment can help you feel more relaxed and open. Many clients find it easier to talk when they’re in a space that feels safe and familiar.
4. Continuity
Online sessions mean you can continue counselling even if you're away from home, unwell, or unable to attend in person. This can make a big difference in maintaining progress during challenging times.
Cons of Online Counselling
1. Technology Issues
Poor internet connection, sound problems, or difficulty using video platforms can sometimes interrupt the flow of a session. We’ll do everything we can to help you prepare and troubleshoot, but occasional tech hiccups do happen.
2. Privacy at Home
Not everyone has access to a private or quiet space at home. This can make it harder to speak freely. If this is a concern, we can discuss ways to manage it, (such as using headphones or typing instead of speaking) but it may be that in-person counselling would work better.
3. Interruptions
Even in a quiet home, life can intrude—whether it’s a knock at the door, a pet needing attention, or children in the background. These kinds of interruptions can sometimes affect focus during a session. It helps to let those around you know you’ll need privacy and to plan ahead where possible.
4. Less Non-verbal Communication
Body language and eye contact can be harder to read online, especially if video quality is low. While our trained counsellors are skilled at adapting, some clients simply prefer being in the same room.
